Discover the Amazon Caribbean
In the midst of the world's lungs, Alter do Chão boasts the largest freshwater aquifer on the planet. The destination has been hailed as the "Caribbean of the Amazon" by the British newspaper The Guardian.
The Weather
During the dry season, Alter do Chão reveals its famous white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters, reminiscent of Caribbean landscapes. In contrast, during the rainy season, these beaches transform into rivers and flooded forests.
The People
The Borari indigenous people are one of the 180 indigenous groups in the Brazilian Amazon and, as original inhabitants of the region, maintain ancestral practices and knowledge passed down through generations, such as through carimbó dance circles and handcrafts.
The Culture
Located at the confluence of three rivers—Tapajós, Amazonas, and Arapiuns—Alter do Chão makes boats more than just a means of transportation: they are true floating homes. The town preserves its Amazonian cultural heritage, blending indigenous influences with those of riverine communities.
The Tourism
Today, Alter has become a major tourist destination in the Amazon, attracting national and international visitors of all ages. Most tourists are young adults between 24 and 40 years old, who often gather for carimbó nights in the village’s central square.
